Found a nifty guide that breaks down everything beginners should know about SEO from Moz.com. Here are the chapters it covers (the title is the link to the guide):
| Chapter 1 | How Search Engines Operate
| Chapter 2 | How People Interact with Search Engines
| Chapter 3 | Why Search Engine Marketing is Necessary
| Chapter 4 | The Basics of Search Engine Friendly Design & Dev.
| Chapter 5 | Keyword Research
| Chapter 6 | How Usability, Experience & Content Affect Ratings
| Chapter 7 | Growing Popularity & Links
| Chapter 8 | Search Engine Tools & Services
| Chapter 9 | Myths & Misconceptions About Search Engines
| Chapter 10 | Measuring & Tracking Success
|
The guide is also available in a printable PDF version that you can just download and view via PDF since it's 54 pages long. However, I would start with the above link to the guide as it has an introduction to the guide on that page. As stated in the introduction, it is recommended that you read the guide from front to back as "each section...is important to understanding the most effective practices of search engine optimization." They've made the effort to ensure it is concise and easy to understand and, after reviewing the guide myself, I'd say they've done a great job.
