Hello all, Something that I have always been very poor at, is marketing. I not a natural salesman and it shows in just about everything I attempt. A quick piece of research indicated that about 71% of new businesses survive longer than three years. So what happened to the other 29%? Clearly some will have failed simply because they weren't viable in the first place, but it's my belief (gut feeling if you like) that many fail through lack of marketing. Getting their message in front of the greatest possible amount of people. Now keeping in mind new "one man band" start-ups would probably have very limited funds, what are your favourite marketing techniques that worked for you? Something that I have always been very poor at, is marketing. I not a natural salesman and it shows in just about everything I attempt. You and me both. But I'm aiming for Pinterest the most. Just need to think of the approach I want to take for branding me and my store. Not easy to do.

Join the club, Victor! LOL When you're the one wearing all the hats, it's extremely difficult to find the time to do everything that needs doing and marketing is usually one of the things that gets put on the back burner. Of course, it would be nice to pay somebody to do that for us, but we have to get the revenue to afford it, first. So, it remains on the back burner while we keep struggling to get the sales we need.
One has to be super disciplined to be able to focus and tackle all tasks, including marketing. I know in my case, I was looking to Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to get my products out there. Unfortunately, Twitter made it too difficult and time consuming to build a following that would see your products.
Then Facebook started hiding our business pages from the general public and I'm really not interested in promoting products under my personal name. Plus, Facebook is so very distracting with all the fake news and what-not that one must weed through to get to something meaningful. I, among many other one-man shops, simply do not have the time, money, or even the amount of discipline it takes to focus on making Facebook an effective marketing tool.
However, it would seem that the social networks that allow people to share images is becoming the more popular (and effective) FREE marketing tools. I haven't looked into Instagram, yet, but know that Pinterest also has paid options for those who can afford to develop paid marketing campaigns that are measurable.
The thing about Pinterest is that while you are spending a LOT of time letting yourself get distracted by all the things you find you want to repin on your feed, the mere action of doing so is building on your marketing tool. The more boards, the more pins, the more interest you will generate in them and, thereby, the more eyeballs you'll get on the images of your products that are pinned there.
What's even better about Pinterest is that it's easy to determine if something is real and worth sharing. I tend to focus on things like recipes, DIY projects, gardening tips, ideas and projects, crafting ideas and how-tos, camping ideas, beautiful images of nature, images of my favorite artists (Monet, Renoit, etc.), aaaaand you get the idea. LOL
Many people use Pinterest to find ideas for new things, whether it's a recipe, DIY project or what have you. So, by focusing on such things, you're definitely going to reach a larger audience. The same applies to other such tools as Instagram and even Google+ -- learn what a site's users use it for.
On Google+ people tend to focus more on business and useful business tools, so that's what I share there, in addition to much of the same stuff I share on Pinterest. I'm not sure what people use Instagram for mostly, but from what I've gathered from those who do use it, it would seem to be more of a social nature. If anyone here does use it, please feel free to chime in and share what you know about it.
As for me, I think I've rambled on enough for the moment. Plus, I need to start thinking about din-din and hopefully getting some of these images scanned this evening. I sure hope you were able to find something useful in there. LOL
