going as far as withdrawing from the UPU if negotiations are not agreeable. Okay, what does this mean in layman's terms? Thanks for posting.

The agreements drawn up between countries regarding international postal services are handled by the UPU. For example, the ridiculously low rates China sellers pay to ship to the US are governed by their agreement with us through the UPU. It's that agreement that has been causing the USPS to lose money, which forces them to pass on the expense to US shippers because they have no other way to make up those losses. Trump (and Congress) wants to renegotiate that agreement to balance things out as we all know they need to. If China (and other countries) do not accept terms that the US deems fair, then the US will withdraw from the UPU and set their own rates to make sure things ARE fair for the US.
If that happens, then no country will be able to do a thing about it because there is no longer any written agreement between us and them. They'll simply be forced to pay whatever rates the USPS sets if they want to ship to the US. Whatever happens, I sure hope we'll start seeing a decrease in shipping costs over the coming years.
Does that make sense?

I edited the above to add a bit more info in an attempt to make it clearer. My brain has been in a fog the past few days, so I felt that what I had previously written needed some help. LOL

Trump (and Congress) wants to renegotiate that agreement to balance things out as we all know they need to. If China Yes, this makes perfect sense. It would be such an absolute blessing and would help our economy out so much by leveling the playing field on shipping. I'll be just as fine in pulling out regardless if an agreement cannot be made. Honestly, no President has to be really smart to figure this one out, so I do not know why one has not figured this out already....I can only say they must have been dumb then.

That's one thing I gotta say, Trump is not worried about taking on China (I'll leave it at that since I know we are not supposed to talk about politics). I'm just really glad to hear this being talked about out loud.

The thing that irritates me to no end about China is that you can ship by e-packet from there to your door for like $5, and the same thing shipped in from your door to another door in the US is at minimum $7.25. Shipped to China is $50. www.skubana.com/usps-epacket-program-affects-e-commerce/

Shipped to China is $50. Yep. That's exactly what US merchants have been complaining about. It has only become more widely known since eCommerce took off in a big way. Now that we have a president with the guts to take on China, hopefully things will finally be balanced out -- and not just when it comes to eCommerce.

I was talking about this on Bonanza... I have seen a surge in sales this week, pretty much like December. I see that tons of sellers and sites in my category have either raised prices or shipping fees. I however did not, still usually 2.95 for shipping and $1 for each extra item. While I can lose about 40¢ on some shipments to zone 8/9, I did some basic math on the number of items I average per order, and found that is about 2.2 items per order. Since first class mail is broken into 4 ounce brackets, it really costs me the same to ship 1 or 2 items, then 3-4 items are the same cost, so I really don't lose a whole lot. If I am getting $4.20 shipping on average, there is no reason to raise my rates. I have always made a small profit on shipping multiple items in an order, just that will be a little less now. I am going to try to save the extra on supplies and product costs instead of raising shipping.

I've had a few recent sales where the packages were at 14 to 15 ounces and crossed slightly over $5.00. It is the higher ounces that I have to start raising my shipping on...that and lower priced single items even if lower weight because I have to ship them in a box. I cannot afford to eat the cost of a little higher price in shipping for these items AND eat the cost of the box on lower priced listings.
Hope that makes sense.
___________
Gravity, I think similar on listings where I have more than one of.

I very rarely get multiple item orders, but I use calculated shipping on all of my shops. On eCrater, I make sure my flat rates for "with another item" only adds the difference that would take it closer to actual cost.
I'm reducing prices across the board, anyway, so the shipping hikes shouldn't make much of a difference. Normally, I wouldn't do that, but I'm trying to get rid of my in-stock inventory so I can focus more on other revenue streams.

Did the usps happen to go back down some on their first class mail packages?

Not that I've noticed, but I'm still getting used to the new numbers.
