Thanks PickyChicky I'm still "okay" with them. I definitely will not be getting borealis anymore. lol. cindybear those are nice pictures. Thanks for sharing!!! About the black, I also do like using black and have heard that about black with Google. I've not heard it as a definite rule yet? So, what do we do...take the pics that need it or go along with something that does not seem to yet be a rule. I'm thinking for the items that have to have black to just go ahead and do it. That's just my opinion. It can be dealt with at a later date if it has to. If they ever make it a for sure rule then we can temporarily leave the listing out of Google and have time to change the photos....and that's only if we decide to. I hope others will share also.

I read a few times somewhere, cannot remember where, to use one of those containers that we use to store our food in. Not the real thick durable ones, and put a small whole into the bottom of it. Then lay it flat keeping the bottom of the container bottom up without the lid. Put the camera lens right up to the hole. They say to do it like this so that the flash can be kept on and yet the small hole will keep the flash from being too strong. It would have to be for small objects.
I did try this a few times long ago and had a lamp on beside it. I could not get them to come out good. Maybe it would be different with the clamp lights now. I'll have to give it a try also just to see since I am curious now...I forgot all about that.

the pendants were actually taken inside of a plastic translucent milk carton, cut in half with 2 lamps on outside... the others were just taken with different backgrounds... I also used the translucent storage containers because they mute the light...though most days now I just throw up white paper, or black felt and take pictures... here is one that I was working with...but decided not to list at this time..it is a necklace, bracelet and there are also a pair of pierced earrings...Aurora Borealis Crystal...still trying to figure out the best way to show them

cindybear I think those came out pretty good. They do still show some of the coloring effects.

Cindy, I'll have to try that with the milk carton.
Good luck on the borealis. If you figure out anything nifty on how to photo them, please share.

cindybear PickyChicky Who would have thought....my smaller light box got a hole in the top of the box where the tissue was. Seeing as how we talked about what we did today about making a hole in the top of a container, I decided to cut the lights off in my office other than for the monitor to my computer, put the lens of the camera slightly through the tissue leaving the flash on at a low setting (moderate to high still seemed to be a bit too much) and here we are. Some of the flash stayed out of the box since I put the lens through the hole. The background is still somewhat dark. Maybe I can find a very bright white background that is more glossy or something....although the background I used is pretty glossy already. Not too bad though as is I think....especially after all the pics and time lol.

Sharon...do you use any editing programs...this photo would be fine with a bit of autocorrect or a slight re-set in brightness and contrast...
my photos don't look like they right out ot the camera..the do take a bit of editing

@tiptoptreasures Those actually look great, but like cindybear said, you can use photo editing software to adjust the brightness and contrast. I've had to do that with several photos, myself, for both scanned images and ones taken with the camera. It actually helps to get the true color of the product to come through. My two Josef Originals are good examples. The blue in them was coming out so pale, but adjusting the brightness in Photoshop helped to bring the true blue out. While the background may have come out a little darker, it was a true representation of the product and was more easily seen despite the slightly darker background, which is white. If I had a black background, the blue might have come out better on its own, but the only dark background I currently have is brown and it was changing the color.

Hey you all.
Yes, I use Picasa. I tried to brighten it but the larger borealis were washing out quickly.
What do you all use. Maybe there is something better than Picasa...like maybe a special tool on something like Picasa that will brighten not just the whole photo in order to prevent the wash out. Picasa has only the basics I believe.

I did not think to use contrast at the same time....On Picasa, for making items brighter, they call these "fill light" and "highlights." Both work to make items brighter.

I use the simple fix in Windows Photo gallery...this can do a quick lighten and contrast.. if a picture needs more work then I also use the free download of irfan View...this program has so many options that even after 4 years I have still not found/or used them all www.irfanview.com/In irfanview, I usually used color corrections, contract and sharpen views....with color corrections, I can actually darken/lighten the background, contrast and sharpen the images

Thank you Cindy. I will definitely be trying the irfanview....I need to be able to bounce up some from what I am already using.

it is very good for small things like jewelry...milk jug and macro on the camera...also see they have the translucent plastic tub too, though I do it a bit diffently I liked using the dark background most times with jewelry a lot better also
