Sorry to bring up an old thread, but @tiptoptreasures had requested that I add a couple of questions to an email I was going to send to Presto.
I did get a reply early last week but didn't realize it until just now when I was checking my message folder for something else. So, here's the conversation... first my questions, then their reply.....
MY QUESTIONS: - I see that there is a limit of 500 characters for our short description, and a limit of 10,000 characters for our long description. Does either google organic or google shopping use all of those characters? If not, do you know where they stop?
Also, same question regarding the 'Image title' and the "Description alt tag'. I don't see any limit stated under the boxes.
- One person asked "I would like to know if Google organic more heavily relies on the short description or the long description or both. It seems that when I search for a listing on Google organic that it shows the short description rather than the long description...
- I'd also like to know if Google organic uses the info we have given for our image such as the titles and the Description Alt Tag.
That's it for now. kenoticket
THEIR REPLY: Hello kenoticket,
Thank you for your inquiry. Google only uses the short description of the item - the long description is for greater detail about an item or adding additional information about your store or policies if you choose. Google recommends using around a 500 character description, and all characters are included.
Image title and alt tags should be fairly short - these are used for automated "crawling" purposes and are used as part of Google's algorithms, however more weight is placed on item titles and descriptions. Image titles and alt tags are not used for Google Shopping.
Thank you for contacting PrestoStore.

I'm sure glad that you asked these questions.
Me: "One person asked "I would like to know if Google organic more heavily relies on the short description or the long description or both. It seems that when I search for a listing on Google organic that it shows the short description rather than the long description..."

Question...So it sounds like it is the short description that both Google shopping and Google organic only use, which I knew this about Google shopping. You'd think that Google organic would read the long description also but based on what Presto is saying they are not. Is that what you got out of it, Keno?
It is difficult to write a short description (500 characters and I assume this includes the spaces) in detail along with a long description without having the two look like I am writing a broken record lol. I wonder how I can make it be in the shoppers eyes that these two areas have their own area for a reason and not just for the SEO reason that I know behind the scenes....you know what I mean?

"If" Google organic does not crawl the long description I guess I could use it for the really detailed stuff like measurements and a summary of bullets and repeat the title somewhat at the top of it....keeping the condition of the listing in there and my other shipping details. Plus, for the areas I want to highlight I could make a bold heading in the long description and then write out the related text to it after the bold heading (basically it would be recapping from an area of the short description when doing this). Here's where I am hoping that all who sell on Presto will see this so that we can put our heads together. Editing to add: I just got done with listing here...this is what I mean on how I might have to do mine from here on out depending on what Presto really means... www.prestostore.com/store.php?seller=TreasureAisle&pd=7991124#.U2Lu5KIsqNg

Unless Google has changed something in organic searches, they have always crawled the entire page of a site, which would include the long description, but only include so many characters in the short description you see in search results, whether or not you have a separate short description in your attributes. I'll look into it more tomorrow as I'm ready for beddy bye after dealing with technical issues all afternoon.
My printer quit working wirelessly and I still haven't gotten it fixed...grrr! So, unless it corrects itself like it did the first time this happened a couple of months ago, I'll have that to deal with first thing tomorrow.

Well, I can't seem to find any specific information that would answer any of the above questions, but I did find some great articles that would help immensely with our SEO efforts and posted them under Successful SEO in 2014. Now, back to work for me. Of course, my printer cleared itself out overnight and is now working again, so I can get back to what I was doing yesterday...woohoo!

Here is a helpful letter/character counter that is free to use. The count that it gives you includes blank spaces. www.lettercount.com/

My opinion was asked on whether Google crawls our Long descriptions or not. I am copying and pasting what I said in the email for others to make their own opinion on. This is mine. In my opinion, Presto is wrong on this one, and I'm gonna prove it to you.
Enter the following paragraph into the search bar on Google and see what comes up: When fully stocked...Moms Pennies From Heaven carries one of the largest varieties of peg votives anywhere on the internet and style's as well as quantities available are always changing.
This sentence is near the bottom of every peg votive listing that I have on every site that I actively list or use to sell or promote them. If what Presto says is true, that would not be searchable in Google.
It is widely known that you can not say anything on the net anywhere without Google seeing it and crawling it. In my opinion, your long description is crawled. Your Short description is sent out in a feed. In the past, Presto has given bad information and when I questioned Jon about it, he confirmed it. Sometimes, it depends on who you are talking to. They don't all have the same amount of knowledge. I felt that testing the theory would either confirm or deny what goes to Google and what doesn't.
When you look at Google, you will see spots for wwwmomspennies.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.htmlwww.bonanza.com › Moms Pennies From Heaven www.momspenniesfromheaven.com/store.php?seller...navt1... (PRESTO) www.bonanzamarket.co.uk › Moms Pennies From Heaven www.bonanza.mx/listings/Home.../45950831www.bonanzamercado.es › ... › HOMCO › Candles, Candleholders twittweb.com/home+interiors+partylit-32993280 www.bonanzamarketplace.ca › Moms Pennies From Heaven www.bonanzamarche.fr/listings/Home-Interiors-Peg.../116484033www.bonanzamarche.fr/listings/Home-Interiors-Peg.../81175577You can test this for yourself. Try to search a phrase or paragraph that is definitely your own words and see where you show up. Like maybe a phrase in your boilerplate.I have even found my picture blocks from my boilerplate show up in Google Images so I know Google crawls our listings. Just remember, though they crawl the entire listing, they only show the first 250 characters and spaces or so in Organic queries, and Presto (If they do like Bonanza does) incorporates the first 250 characters and spaces of your short description into their site feed, but Google only shows around 150 of those characters and spaces in the queries. This is what I think... Marianna

@momspennies, you are correct. This is nothing new. You were able to search a phrase such as you mentioned years ago. I brought it up once over on Bonanza. Long descriptions are crawled by Google. Went and found one thread over on Bonz - link

Thanks for posting that, Marianna. I was a bit confused as to why Presto would tell users that Google doesn't crawl long descriptions because absolutely everything gets crawled on the internet -- and much, if not all, of that information is stored somewhere, whether by Google, Yahoo, Bing, or even the NSA.
Speaking of which, I just came across an article in The Houston Chronicle yesterday about the amount of information that is collected on people -- not just Americans, but worldwide. The title is pretty self-explanatory, "More privacy sought for Web users: White House report questions what firms do with data they collect," but it discusses how Congress is pushing for tighter legislation on what information can be collected and by whom.
It even mentions how President Obama was surprised during a recent review of the NSA's activities to see just how much information is being collected and that it's not just being used by the intelligence community. It's being used far more broadly in the public and private arenas and the data being collected comes from not only the Web, but also smartphones and other sensors.
So, for anyone to say that an entire page of data is not being crawled is a little puzzling. I'm no expert, but do know how closely we're being monitored thanks to laws passed during Baby Bush's reign after 9/11. Google is just one tool the NSA uses to gather its information. Over the years, they've used all data collected via the search engines and have developed their own gathering tools.
I'm no conspiracy theorist, either. This is public knowledge and is being discussed in the news and on documentary shows all the time. The NSA or any government body just doesn't discuss in complete detail exactly what they're collecting or how they're collecting all of this data. Heck, even the President wasn't aware of the depth they've been going into until recently.
