As promised, I'm copying Kim Komando's articles regarding managing and securing your WiFi (wireless connection). This first one is related to finding out whether or not someone is using your broadband connection -- and possibly snooping around on your wirelessly connected computers and other wireless devices, stealing vital information...
See Who is Stealing Your Internet
by Kim Komando -- January 15, 2015
Being online or using Wi-Fi all the time is so convenient, most people don't realize the effort it takes to stay connected. Wireless networks in every home, business and school have made it almost impossible for us not to be online wherever we go.
But that means that the bad guys have a connection anywhere, too. Anybody near your house or your workspace can access your Wi-Fi. This means that they can steal your Internet connection, or snoop on your personal data.
People have had their identities stolen over wireless networks, and many have lost their savings and even their identities. That's why the first thing to do when setting up a network is to secure it. Click here to learn how to secure your wireless network (article copied in next post).
Of course, hackers or neighbors might still find a way on. How would you know if someone was using your Internet before it was too late?
Don't worry, I've got you covered. This free download provides you with a list of every device connected to your wireless network.
Wireless Network Watcher scans your network and shows you the IP address, MAC address, name and manufacturer of detected devices on your network.
As soon as you boot up the program, you'll see all the detected devices come up in a list. It's that simple!
You should be able to recognize all the devices on the list. If you see one that doesn't belong, you know somebody is connected without your permission.
Download Instructions
To download the program, navigate to the Wireless Network Watcher download page using my blue link button below. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the section labeled "Feedback" just before the Supported Languages table and click on the blue text link labeled "Download Wireless Network Watcher (In Zip file)."
Note: Some security programs flag all portable programs as a potential virus. Don't worry; I've tested this and it's safe.
Your download should begin immediately. When the download is complete, open the .zip file and extract the program. You can extract the files by right-clicking in the file window and selecting "Extract All."
Run the file labeled as an application. As soon as the program runs it will detect all devices connected on your network.
Wireless Network Watcher should display all known devices and names attached to your network. If there's a device that you don't recognize, you can boot them from your network by changing your router settings.
