I have my standalone shop on Storenvy and just got a notice this morning about a new tool they have, which I think is called Conversion Booster. What it does is posts your sales in real-time to your social media outlets, like Facebook. I closed the announcement pop-up and now can't retrieve it, so I don't remember if it mentions the customer's name.
However, the sample read something like, "Look what XXX just bought 9 minutes ago!" and shows a thumbnail of the product. I'm sure it mentioned the customer's name because the description of the app says the purpose is to show "window shoppers" that real people are shopping and buying from your store, which is supposed to help build trust and convert more shoppers to buyers.
I read all the time about sellers wanting to use their reviews in one way or another and other sellers saying they should get permission first, especially if they're going to be used in some other manner than originally intended. That some other manner would apply to a marketing tactic like this, so I don't really think it's a good idea.
I mean, it's one thing to post something like, "Look at some of the things we sold this month!" and an entirely different thing to include a customer's name while publicizing what was supposed to be a private transaction -- all unbeknownst to them. I know lumping items sold together without including the names of the buyers may not provide that "proof" that others are buying from you. BUT how does it build trust when other shoppers see that you're publicizing customer transactions with their names included?
What are your thoughts on this topic?

I think it is inappropriate.

I sure don't want my name and address or any other personal information posted.
Hmmm Now I am really thinking about this and it can be really embarrassing like:
Hey, look at "full name" just purchased "some sex toy".
Hey, look at "full name" just purchased "Gameboy" (Which was a surprise Christmas gift)
and so on

I would not like my name showing along side an online purchase. Nevertheless, I do like seeing what others have bought at places like Etsy. Those don't show a buyer unless someone wants to leave a review.
A lot of sellers prefer to hide their sold items. I like my sold items to show to give potential buyers ideas.

This is what I received from Storenvy.....
Hi Vee,
There's something alluring about walking by a busy storefront in the mall or seeing a line of people waiting outside for a new product release. The fact that other people want what that store has to offer builds a sense of trust for most shoppers.
We've teamed up with Conversion Booster to help you create an online equivalent of a busy store, by showing your potential customers live proof of other people buying your products. This widget integration is built to:
Boost your conversion rate by highlighting other customers that have purchased products! Display orders in real time to create customer validation and social proof! Create a sense of urgency for visitors and expose new products! Promote your top selling products to window shoppers and convert them! Customize the widget to match your store!
The Conversion Booster integration is now available in the Extras tab of your admin panel.
Just a few clicks of a button and you'll have it installed in under two minutes. Take advantage of Conversion Booster's 7 day free trial to see if it's right for you, cancel at any time before the trail ends and you will not be charged.
Example...Johnny from San Francisco, United States just purchased the "_____ _____" About 1 minute ago.
So basically it is a paid feature/service which one can use to help boost sales or not.

Thank you for copying that frazzledthreads . It's good to see that they only include the first name, but still. Of course, I wasn't planning on paying for it (or even using the free trial), but it did get me to thinking about what shoppers might think of those sellers who do choose to do such things. LOL @catcop ...sex toy. Even without the last name, I think "Johnny from San Francisco" would be embarrassed by that, worrying that it might show his full name somewhere online next to his new toy.

On Addoway, they have a section that shows traffic update www.addoway.com/ Right top section Traffic Updates often to show the time and that "someone just viewed" "the name of the item". You can click on that item to see it and it will go back on the traffic update as viewed again. I used to sell there and watched that thing and would log out and search my items to get them on the traffic update. This is sort of cool

You just reminded me that I still have stuff on Addoway to copy. I believe it's just the books, though...low priority, BUT I really need to get that stuff copied so I can shut that shop down.

If there is no feedback on the seller's site anywhere that can identify that person (buyer) buying a certain product and as long as they only use the first name or possibly even the middle name, then I think I'd be okay with that.
But if feedback can be left on the seller's site and if there was a user ID that the buyer used close to their real name, then I consider it to be an invasion of my privacy big time. Products I buy should only be known to me without someone being able to figure out that it is me.
I sort of remember a discussion coming up like this on Bonanza a long time ago. I remember a few sellers said that they had a different account on Bonanza strictly for buying so that sellers in the Bonanza community would not see what it was.

I just noticed frazzledthread's post at the bottom. I'd be perfectly fine with it then.
