Disappearing from Search Results? Then You Must Read This...

I went back to the "Exclude Boilerplate Content" page because I was going to provide the direct link to it in its own thread and just noticed that it says something about a Context File. I have no idea what they're talking about, so will have to look further into that. Places like Presto may already have that set up so Google knows they're using the nocontent code.

Although, I'm not sure why one would have to tell Google that to begin with. It's a code that should automatically be recognized by the bots, so why would one have to take an extra step to tell Google it's being used? It makes no sense to me. LOL So, I'll have to get back to you on that after I've had a chance to investigate.

@tiptoptreasures Can you edit that source code somewhere in Presto? There are a few things that need to be changed. Considering the way they're doing your keywords, I would take on that task yourself rather than letting Presto handle it for you.

First, under the meta name="keywords" section, you need to remove "newsletter" and the exact title text and add a variety of other keywords related to the product itself, particularly long tail keywords (keywords with more than one word). The title should be broken down into multiple keywords, which would include several long tail keywords (ie, milk glass, Fire King, casserole dish), plus others added (ie, cookware, bakeware, etc.).

The way they currently have it set up, it sort of forces users to stuff their title with keywords in order to include everything that should be included as a meta tag, which Google frowns upon in the title. Plus, it could be deemed duplicate content if the exact title text is referred to too many times on the entire page -- not just in the meta tags where it's already used seven times.

Secondly, regarding the <meta name="revisit-after" content="10 days"> section, I think I would prefer having it set to 7 days, but I guess 10 days is acceptable. Although, if I were in the process of making major changes to the site, like adding the nocontent code to all listings, I'd want it set to a lower number of days.

Lastly, regarding the <meta property="og:description" content="Gay Fad Fruit Fire King 1 Pint Casserole Dish Bowl White Milk Glass" /> tag, it should be pulling from your long or short description rather than the title. They're pointing to the exact title text seven times within the tags and that could be a problem with Google, especially since all of the keywords are also being used in the body content.

Regarding the Twitter tag, it's just telling Google that your product is linked to a Twitter account. So, that's a good thing. Too bad they don't have similar tags for your other social media accounts.

P.S. -- You don't have to worry about being a chatter box here. These kinds of things need to be discussed and sometimes at length in order to get a grasp on the whole thing. I know I'm chatting away, myself, asking questions and offering answers I've found, but this is a learning process for me, too, which I wholeheartedly welcome.

If Presto provides boxes for you to fill out, then, yes, you would use those. It's very easy to do. Simply type in the description you want for the description tag. For the keywords, just type in a list of keywords separated by commas. I would definitely ask Presto what would happen to your existing meta tags if you decide you want to take on those two yourself.

However, if the boxes are already available for you to fill out, I would think that nothing would happen to the existing tags until you replace them with your own by filling out those boxes. Just be sure that what you enter will actually replace what's currently there because you don't want to duplicate anything and you don't want some of the ones that are currently there.

I heard back from Presto on the nocontent and there was no problem with them adding this in.

@tiptoptreasures Awesome! Glad to hear they were able to add the nocontent code for you. Marianna will be happy to hear that because she was one who's concerned about having to do anymore editing, particularly since she has thousands of listings and still hasn't gotten through all of them, yet.

About the meta tags, I'd be interested in hearing what they say, too. I'm surprised the meta description you entered replaced the title in more than just the meta description tag. None of the others should be copying from the meta description tag. I also hope they can change the number of days for you. That should be an easy fix.

You can now see that adding a meta description takes the place of 3 instances where the title to my listing was previously at and this is what I am wanting to make sure is okay.
