@momspennies Much of what has been talked about is optional and has been discussed for better ranking in Google organic. Having duplicate content is something that is no longer optional but supposedly, Google is going easier on small businesses that sell the same items throughout the internet (Nicole posted a link on this somewhere). A good example on duplicate content outside of small businesses that sell products is if you were to write a blog and use a paragraph from another site. You would have to give credit (attribution) to the source that had the content on their site in the first place. Truth be told, this part right here has not been completely understood yet because some questions are needing to be sent into the writer of the Search Engine blog who wrote about this in the first place. Here is the search engine blog link on this sesconference.com/atlanta/rates-pass-details.php?utm_source=sew&utm_medium=600x500&utm_content=early-bird&utm_campaign=sesatl14Now for me on the above mentioned duplicate content, I decided to add in a nocontent code into my source code (Presto did it for me) for my shipping area to tell Google not to read it. My shipping info is throughout all of my listings and I did not want to take the chance on Google deeming it as duplicate content even though this shipping info is within my site only. The code that Presto added in for me is this here <div class="nocontent">YOUR BOILERPLATE CONTENT GOES HERE</div> From what we are getting out of all this Google talk is that Google organic does not want boilerplate in our listings either.....so the nocontent code is a way around this so that I can keep it in my listings. And then like said, I was concerned that Google might view my repetitive shipping info throughout all of my listings as duplicate content. I figure my shipping info is there for the reader and not Google anyway. Better to be safe than sorry. ___________________________________ One thing I would definitely check for first is to open one of your listings up and right click on it and then click on View page source. Make sure there are not any funny words that should not be in there. I had the word "newsletter" in my source code. It was not supposed to be in there. It picked it up from one of my web pages. Presto removed it. Now take a look at the rest of your source code having to do with the word Meta and ask yourself if there are any other keywords that you wish were in your source code. Chances are likely that you will say yes. I noticed that my source code had about 7 instances where they were using my title which is fine but that does not tell Google as much as I'd like them to know. Also in there are the keywords for my category and subcategory, which is good. I found Twitter in there, which is good also. Let's take a look at one of your peg votive holders. Wouldn't it be nice to see a few longtail keywords in there like peg votive, homco votive, home decor ? If you decided to go this route on wanting to add some longtail keywords to your source code, you'd have to enter it into the meta keyword box on Presto. It would then automatically be added to your existing source code. You'd enter them in with a comma after each one with no space after the comma. If you decided to go this route, you will want to make sure that you do in fact use these words in your long description. Also make sure that none of your longtail or single keywords are the same as your category or subcategory.....because like said, those will already be in your source code. Here is a link on meta keywords. It is important to read it if you want to go this route www.seologic.com/faq/meta-keywords___________________________________________ Now about the Meta description box on Presto, it is completely optional whether you want to use this or not. Since you already use your short descriptions as sort of a teaser (to entice the shopper) like I believe I thought you posted about before, you probably will not want to worry about it because that is exactly what the meta description is used for....as a teaser in Google organic in hopes of getting the customer to click on the listing. When using the meta description on Presto, it will replace the first line of your short description in Google organic but your short description would remain the same going to Google shopping no matter. I'm using it because I tend to use a more serious side of the short description, especially at the beginning and needed to have something in Google organic to help entice the buyer to click on my listings. But if you do decide to use the meta description, make sure to have that same blurb or very close to it within your long description, too. So, that is where all the talk came from on the meta description. No need to worry about that though if you do not want to. It's just something that I read up on and decided I wanted to do and talked with Presto about. You'll see it in a few of my posts Note, Google will not rank you higher for a meta description. I hope all this makes sense.

And then there are other smaller things that have been brought up about repeating the exact titles into the tops of our listings that this might not be good with Google organic either. I admit that I have not had a chance to read everything. I grabbed a hold of what I felt I needed/wanted to do due to the way I do my listings and started taking those points into consideration.
What I have given weight to so far is what I posted about in my above post.

I'm going to spend some time tomorrow putting together a summary of everything without conversational content (to keep it brief and to the point) and will include all relative links. That way the info can be in one place and easier to follow. I will also post those questions to the blog tomorrow. Right now, it's time for beddy-bye, so I'll get to that stuff after I've had some rest. It's been a busy week and I still have lots to do. Nitey-nite!

Glad to hear he got that all fixed for you. I've been busy with appointments this week (have another today), so haven't had a chance to finish researching my own products. What I've noticed so far is that my Etsy listings seem to be getting the attention in organic searches while both the Etsy and eCrater listings are doing well in Google Shopping. I think I may also be noticing a trend that has me concerned. So far, it looks as if the products I listed on Etsy first are the ones getting the attention in organic searches, but the ones I listed on eCrater first are getting the attention. It's really odd because organic search is where listings from all stores should show up (duplicate or not) and Google Shopping is where the duplicates are supposed to get knocked off, but it seems to be the other way around. So, I definitely have more research to do to determine what's happening. I haven't even had a chance to look at Google Analytics, yet, which I'm hoping to do sometime today. I'll post the details of my findings when I'm done. P.S. -- I wonder if manually submitting my eCrater site to the search engines will help. Thanks Nicole. I'm relieved that they got it done. I'm trying to understand what you mean about the listings you did on Etsy first and the listings you did on eCrater first... Even though Presto submits our URL, last night I went ahead and submitted my URL to Google organic, Bing and Yahoo. I figured it could not hurt. I tried to find the link for you but could not find it.

@tiptoptreasures When I first started listing things at Etsy, most of the clothing items were not yet listed at eCrater, so they got listed at Etsy first and then copied over to my eCrater store. Well, those that were first listed on Etsy are the ones appearing in organic searches, but none of the eCrater versions are appearing anywhere except Google Shopping. Does that make more sense? LOL
I haven't checked the ornaments, yet, most of which have been listed at eCrater for years and only the vintage ones were added to Etsy in January. It will be interesting to see how they're all appearing in Google organic. If I can't find my eCrater listings for those, then something is definitely wrong with my eCrater store.
Although, I haven't promoted the eCrater store at all; nor have I manually submitted either store to the search engines, but at least my clothing listings on Etsy are showing up. I did just sell an ornament via my Etsy store Sunday, so I'm wondering if they're even seeing my eCrater listings. I wonder if Google has dinged eCrater as a whole, or if the redesign caused things to be reset, because my listings there did used to rank well in searches.
Anywho, I'm just getting online and have some personal tasks to tend to before tackling any of this. First and foremost is getting this Comcast mess cleaned up because our signal is horrible and is most likely due to a defective used modem they provided. We expected new equipment, not used, and we're paying a monthly rental for it.
The cable keeps screwing up, our internet signal keeps fluctuating drastically, and our phone isn't picking up the caller ID info half the time. This is absolutely ridiculous because this was supposed to be their best service and it's a lot worse than what we had before.
So, I'm going to buy our own modem and have them come out and get it set up properly. That way we'll have the best equipment without paying a monthly rental. If that doesn't fix the problem, then we need to rethink the service we're paying for. While it is cheaper than what we were previously paying, it's not worth the lackluster service, particularly when it's supposed to be their best.
Anywho, off to take care of that...

My head is spinning. gonna take a blood pressure pill.
I started my comparisons last night and was so tired I went to bed without saving the document. Overnight my computer did an automatic update that wiped it all out. Today, I'm working on Pinterest and will at least have done something constructive til my head clears.

UGH! I have been searching online and talking on the phone all this time just trying to figure out which modem I needed and where to buy it. Comcast really makes it difficult for peeps to buy their own freaking modem. They say they used to sell it, but now Best Buy sells it, but Best Buy does NOT have it for sale anywhere in this country.
So, after going back and forth on the phone between Comcast, Best Buy and the Geek Squad, I ended up having to buy it from Amazon. Let's just hope it's not one that's registered to another Comcast customer because they won't authorize it if it is. I bought it new, but that doesn't mean it wasn't sent to a customer who just didn't return the equipment. We'll find out Saturday when it gets here.
Anywho, I haven't even eaten, yet, and I still have the other tasks I planned to tackle today. So, I may have to deal with the Google stuff tomorrow. Being frustrated on the phone for several hours has really wore me out! LOL

PickyChicky "When I first started listing things at Etsy, most of the clothing items were not yet listed at eCrater, so they got listed at Etsy first and then copied over to my eCrater store. Well, those that were first listed on Etsy are the ones appearing in organic searches, but none of the eCrater versions are appearing anywhere except Google Shopping. Does that make more sense? LOL" Yes, this makes sense. Do you have the same items listed on both sites just out of curiosity? It sounds like your Etsy listings are appearing as how you want them to, both in Google organic and Google shopping? Congrats on your sale. About Comcast, Time Warner has done that to us also. ______________________________________________ I've been taking a look at some of my listings in Google organic and so far it is not pretty. They are ranking low to the point where I cannot find some of them and I'm putting in whole titles....of course some of the ones that do come up are Bonanza's old listings before my Presto listings. A good majority of my store has new listings though that were never placed on Bonanza. Hopefully I'll have more listings showing up in there better than what they have been as I dig deeper. This definitely shows that I've got to do something. The way things are right now just are not going to work. Sales are nearly dead for me even though I know it is summertime. It sucks that Google gives info on how to do better and yet, they take forever to drop old listings. That sure does not help much. This is probably what bothers me the most about Google at this point. I wonder if my items not appearing well has anything to do with me having Newsletter in my source code. Also, since most of my store has new listings, maybe it is taking longer for those items to show up decent in Google organic? Editing to add: Well, I just did take a look at a listing that I originally had on Bonanza back in February or March I believe. I've been keeping track of it in Google organic. Ever since I deleted it from Bonz and put it as a listed status on Presto back in Feb or March, a link for it would still come up for Bonanza first in Google organic. I just took a look again today. I no longer see the Bonanza link coming up anywhere (knock on wood), and I see the listing come up for my store. Yeah. Hopefully Google is getting a little faster with this. But, faster would be better. PS: I don't know if I'll be digging in as much as you and Marianna to see how my items are placing in Google organic but maybe I should....

Cable companies are a pain in the you know what most of the time. I dread getting on the phone with them.
PS: Whenever I talk about Google I always seem to get long winded. There's just so much to Google.

I started looking around last night Sharon, but lost all the info I captured. My computer updated over night and I forgot to save the document, so I have to start all over again.

I read that Marianna. You sure jumped in and started right on it. Actually, I had not thought about approaching Google like that until I read what you posted. It sounds like a good approach to me.
I've always checked a few listings here or there but never dug real deep. There's got to be a story it will tell when digging deep is what I'm thinking.
Sorry that your hard work got lost.

The more listings in the more categories you check, the better you'll be able to figure out what is and isn't working because you'll be able to recognize trends. Google Analytics would help with that, too. From the few I checked, I could already see the trend where my Etsy listings may have knocked my eCrater listings out of organic searches. It's just odd that both are doing well in Google Shopping, especially since they're duplicates, because I usually have a good presence in organic searches and can't be found in GS. Yes, I do have duplicates, but only the 79 or so that I have listed at Etsy. I haven't checked any that aren't duplicates, yet, but will tomorrow. Either way, the duplicates should only be affecting my ranking in GS and not organic search. Especially since Google said they were going to be friendlier to small businesses. So, I guess it will take some more investigating to figure out exactly how they're being friendlier. To view our product listings in different stores as duplicates in organic search is just wrong, especially when we don't have HTML capabilities to choose which to ignore. About old listings showing up in searches, I posted a link on the References board the other day under the Google Tools You May Find Useful thread to Google's page, Remove Information from Google. About "newsletter" being in your meta tags, I don't think that would affect your listings much -- not by itself, anyway. While it might not be relative to the topic of the product page, that was really the only word that didn't relate. So, I would think the numerous instances of keywords you had in your meta tags would affect the page's ranking more as they were a bit excessive, as well as exact duplicates. Anywho, my brain is fried for the day, so I will leave it at that for now. I WILL get that Google stuff together tomorrow. I also want to continue researching my listings so I can analyze how mine are being affected and provide clearer examples. I think I should keep those results separate from the summary post, though, just so it doesn't get cluttered up and confusing.

I did find something interesting. to begin with...Amazon is now showing up prominently again in GPS, where as before, they refused to pay to play, so they were not shown in queries. In many cases, if I am showing up in GPS, it is dead last.
Secondly, when i check Google Images, my image will not be there, instead, further down the page, there will be lots of other images that do belong to me, but have nothing to do with what I put in the search bar. In addition, they are usually for Bonanza.
Presto Mart tends to show up in queries before my own website. This I don't like. I just wrote a letter to Presto to discuss what is happening. They have much more influence than we do to contact Google and get some answers.

Here's a source code for one of my listings on eBay. This was THE largest area of meta for eBay. The few other areas did not seem real relevant to me to post here. There are quite a few instances where my titles are repeated also and with the http. Sorry this one below is all jumbled up....eBay's source code is soooooooooooooooooo long. This is how it copied over.
